I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but every time Jennifer Lopez goes to Paris, she pulls out her best looks, and not just statement ones for her many Haute Couture invites. She also debuts more wearable outfits that somehow have just as much of an impact. Case in point: The ivory-dress look she debuted early on during Paris Fashion Week. Ahead of the shows, Lopez was spotted wearing a scoop-neck, long-sleeve maxi dress with a revealing low back, which the singer-actor paired effortlessly with chocolate-brown accessories, including one of her many Hermès Kelly bags in crocodile leather and a pair of PVC Gianvito Rossi mules. She finished off the outfit with gradient-lens aviators.

Together, her outfit just clicks, much to do with the accent color she opted for in deep brown. Ivory dresses are versatile in and of themselves—they look good with basically any color you pair them with—but some absolutely look better than others, and brown is guaranteed to impress every time. J.Lo clearly knows that.

Anyone can style ivory with black, but it’s harder to accessorize with alternative neutrals that aren’t quite as expected or easy. Opting for brown gives any ivory-dress look a feeling of the wearer being in the know and intentional about the way they dress. So the next time you break out one of your ivory dresses, think twice before defaulting to black accessories. Don’t trust me—trust J.Lo. Brown is the chicer choice every time.
